A Christmas Sky Show: ISS and Jupiter Dazzle Stargazers This Holiday
Skywatchers will get a special treat this Christmas, with both the International Space Station (ISS) and Jupiter putting on a show. The ISS will streak across the sky on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, while Jupiter will shine unusually bright in the evening. Both events offer a chance to spot something extraordinary without a telescope. The ISS will be visible in the early hours of Christmas Day, moving at a staggering 17,500 miles per hour. At 250 miles above Earth, it will look like a fast-moving bright star, reflecting sunlight as it passes overhead. Unlike an aircraft, it won't blink or make noise, making it easy to distinguish.
For those in North America, the station will appear at different times depending on location. In New York, it will be visible from 5:56 a.m. to 5:59 a.m. EST, while Chicago can spot it between 6:29 a.m. and 6:35 a.m. CST. Toronto residents should look up between 7:30 a.m. and 7:35 a.m. EST. Tools like NASA's *Spot the Station* app or the *Heavens-Above* website can help track exact visibility times. Meanwhile, Jupiter will dominate the night sky, shining at a magnitude of -2.6 in the constellation Gemini. It will rise shortly after sunset on both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, appearing earlier each night. Nearby, the twin stars Castor and Pollux will accompany it, with Taurus and Orion also visible in the same region. Aboard the ISS, seven astronauts from the Expedition 70 crew celebrated Christmas together on December 25. Their presence added a human touch to the celestial display, as the station raced across the sky below them.
The ISS and Jupiter's visibility provide a rare holiday spectacle for those willing to look up. The station's rapid pass and the planet's brilliance make this a memorable event for stargazers. No special equipment is needed—just clear skies and a bit of patience.
