Solar power has long been crucial for space missions, providing reliable energy beyond Earth's atmosphere. Now, Ascent Solar is driving advancements in thin-film solar technology for both space and ground-based uses. The company's latest innovations aim to expand applications across defence, aviation, and beyond.

Ascent Solar specialises in CIGS thin-film solar cells, which have reached nearly 16% efficiency in commercial production. To enhance performance, the company uses molybdenum as a back layer, enabling better electricity generation—even through thermoelectric processes. While glass-based solar panels are more efficient, thin-film modules dominate space applications due to their light weight and ease of deployment.

The company is developing flexible solar modules for military use, including fabric-mounted chargers for soldiers and forward operating bases. Naval applications are also under exploration. Beyond defence, Ascent Solar is working with airship and UAV manufacturers to power long-endurance drones and high-altitude pseudo-satellites.

Despite delays in the space sector, the firm is targeting six key markets: aerospace, off-grid industrial systems, electric vehicles, marine, building-integrated photovoltaics, and consumer electronics. Potential uses range from vehicle roofs and marine buoys to portable chargers and flexible building materials. Standardised module sizes and voltages are also in development to better fit spacecraft designs.

Ascent Solar's thin-film technology is expanding beyond space into defence, aviation, and everyday applications. With ongoing improvements in efficiency and adaptability, the company aims to meet growing demand across multiple industries. The focus remains on delivering lightweight, flexible solar solutions for both specialised and mainstream uses.
