Atyrau's Nauryz unites cultures and plants roots for a greener future

Atyrau marked Nauryz with a lively mix of cultural celebrations and environmental action. The city hosted a Parade of National Costumes, featuring nearly four thousand participants from 12 ethnic groups. Alongside the festivities, residents took part in a tree-planting campaign to boost the region's green spaces.

The Parade of National Costumes became the centrepiece of this year's Nauryz events. Twelve ethnocultural associations joined, including the Korean, German, Azerbaijani, Tatar, and Uzbek centres. Participants wore traditional dress, highlighting the region's rich diversity. Khayat Dzhamparov, chairman of the republican Dungan association, noted how the event symbolised unity among different communities.

Lida Nasenkova, from the Slavic ethnocultural association, echoed this sentiment. She stressed that Nauryz fosters mutual understanding and strengthens bonds between cultures. The parade also drew representatives from schools, government bodies, and local labour groups.

Beyond the celebrations, Atyrau continued its greening efforts. During Nauryz, volunteers planted 100 saplings as part of a larger initiative. In 2025, the city added 891 pines and firs, along with 1,500 ash trees. Plans for 2026 include planting around five thousand more trees and shrubs to improve the urban environment.

The Atyrau Regional History and Local Lore Museum also contributed to the cultural programme. It opened an exhibition called Art Born from the Spindle, dedicated to traditional crafts. Visitors could watch spinning demonstrations, learning techniques of this ancient skill.

The Nauryz festivities in Atyrau blended cultural pride with environmental progress. The parade showcased the region's ethnic diversity, while the tree-planting campaign expanded the city's green areas. Both efforts reflect Atyrau's commitment to preserving heritage and improving living conditions.
