Australia’s First Space Unicorn Soars After Record $217M Funding Boost

Gilmour Space Technologies has become Australia's first space technology 'unicorn' after raising a record funding round. The company, which builds launch vehicles and satellites, secured 217 million Australian dollars in its latest investment push. This milestone follows the launch of its first satellite, ElaraSat, in June 2025 on a SpaceX rideshare mission.

The funding round was co-led by the National Reconstruction Fund Corp. and Hostplus, with contributions from major investors like Future Fund, Blackbird, and Main Sequence. Other backers included QIC Ventures, Funds SA, Brighter Super, HESTA, and NGS Super. The Australian federal government's 75 million dollar investment aims to boost the country's domestic launch capabilities and advanced manufacturing sector.

Gilmour Space plans to use the funds to expand production of its launch vehicles and satellites. A key focus will be the continued development of Eris, its small launch vehicle, which experienced a setback during a failed launch in July 2025. The company also intends to grow its workforce, adding to its current team of over 220 employees. The funding will support the company's broader goal of securing Australia's access to critical space services. By scaling up operations, Gilmour Space aims to create more high-skilled jobs and strengthen the nation's position in the global space industry.

With a valuation exceeding $1 billion, Gilmour Space is now Australia's first space unicorn. The new funding will accelerate its launch vehicle and satellite programmes while expanding its workforce. The company's progress marks a significant step in developing Australia's independent space capabilities.
