Axiom Space to Launch First Commercial Station in Earth Orbit by 2028
Axiom Space is preparing to launch the first commercial space station in low Earth orbit by 2028. The project comes as several private firms, including Blue Origin and European companies, race to develop their own orbital platforms. The new station will feature two key modules and support a crew of four initially.
The Axiom Station will begin with the Payload Power Thermal Module (PPTM), set for an early 2028 launch. A second module, designed for habitation, will follow shortly after. Together, they will form the core of a station capable of hosting research and astronauts.
The company plans to move existing research equipment from the International Space Station (ISS) to its new facility. This transfer aims to ensure uninterrupted scientific work as the ISS nears retirement. Meanwhile, Axiom is also designing spacesuits for NASA's Artemis III mission, which targets a Moon landing in the same year.
Initially, the station will house four crew members, with expansion plans to double capacity to eight. The project places Axiom alongside other competitors, including Blue Origin and multiple European firms, all working on private orbital stations.
The PPTM's launch in early 2028 will mark the start of Axiom's commercial space station. With research continuity and crew expansion in mind, the company is positioning itself as a major player in low Earth orbit. The station's development coincides with NASA's return to the Moon, reinforcing Axiom's role in both near-Earth and deep-space missions.
