Bavaria's Rhön Region Unveils Three New Stargazing Platforms for Dark Sky Lovers

New Viewing Spots Make the Starry Sky of Rhön-Grabfeld an Unforgettable Experience

By Lea Hohmann

The Bavarian Rhön region will soon gain three exceptional stargazing sites: With the official funding approval for the LEADER project "Establishment of Three Sky Observation Platforms," implementation is now set to begin.

The planned locations include the Kissinger Hütte in the municipality of Sandberg, Burgwallbacher See in Schönau an der Brend, and the Lichtenburg in the town of Ostheim vor der Rhön.

The project is led by the Naturpark und Biosphärenreservat Bayerische Rhön e.V. in collaboration with local municipalities, the district of Rhön-Grabfeld, Rhön GmbH, and the Rhön Biosphere Reserve.

The sites were carefully selected for their exceptionally dark surroundings, free from disruptive light sources, and designed to blend harmoniously with the natural landscape.

Each location will be equipped with rotating star charts, Polaris finders, informational displays, and reclining loungers—offering visitors a comfortable and educational way to explore the night sky.

These new observation platforms are the latest addition to the Rhön Star Park, which has been officially recognized as an International Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) since 2014—making it one of the first of its kind in Germany.

The star park's mission is to preserve the region's naturally dark nightscapes, rich with stars, while reducing light pollution and promoting responsible artificial lighting.

Beyond conservation, environmental education is a key focus: The new platforms will provide people of all ages with access to astronomy and a mindful experience of the night.

With the construction of these sky observation sites, the region is creating an appealing destination for both locals and visitors—a place to pause, marvel, and learn beneath one of Germany's most breathtaking night skies.

Project partners are already urging future visitors to enjoy these sensitive natural sites with care, respect local flora and fauna, and use only designated parking areas—ensuring the beauty and tranquility of these special places endure.
