Belarus family rescues five swans, including frostbitten Grisha now thriving in their care
A family in Belarus has taken in five swans, including one named Grisha, who survived severe frostbite last winter. The birds now live in the Shyshlankouskis' yard, where they receive daily care and attention. Some may eventually return to the wild, but others face lasting injuries.
Grisha was found with badly frostbitten legs and wings near Zhlobin in late December 2025. The Shyshlankouski family, led by Liubou Iosifauna, took him in and provided immediate care. Veterinarian Ryhor Bialiahou performed surgery and nursed the swan back to health.
Now fully recovered, Grisha remains with the family and shows no signs of wanting to leave. The other swans include Nyusha and Vanyusha, who have slightly damaged feathers but are otherwise healthy. Glafira, however, has a wing injury that may prevent her from flying again. Liubou Iosifauna feeds the swans a mix of oats, barley, wheat, mixed grain, and fresh vegetables. Their diet helps maintain their strength, though the long-term future for some remains unclear.
The swans continue to live under the family's care, with Grisha fully settled in their yard. While Nyusha and Vanyusha could still return to the wild, Glafira's injury makes her future uncertain. The Shyshlankouskis remain committed to supporting all five birds for as long as needed.
