National Green Tribunal Orders Bhopal Collector, Sp To Act Against Noise Pollution

Bhopal ordered to curb noise pollution from relentless public announcements

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has ordered Bhopal authorities to take immediate action against excessive noise pollution from public announcement systems. These systems, installed by Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Limited (BSCDCL) and traffic police, have been broadcasting loud messages non-stop, disrupting daily life for residents. A petition was filed against the unauthorised and excessively loud public announcement systems operating across Bhopal. The petitioner claimed these systems violate the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Noise Pollution Rules, 2000. They argued that the continuous high-volume broadcasts—including traffic warnings and instructions—are affecting people’s health and routines.

The NGT responded by directing the Bhopal district collector and police officials to regulate or shut down unauthorised systems. It also instructed the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) to monitor noise levels in affected areas. A detailed report on compliance must be submitted within four weeks. The petition highlighted that these systems are placed near residential zones, commercial areas, courts, hospitals, and schools. This placement further violates noise regulations, causing widespread disturbance.

The NGT’s order requires Bhopal authorities to enforce noise pollution rules strictly. The MPPCB will now assess noise levels and report back within a month. Residents may see changes in how public announcements are managed across the city.
