Boehringer's survodutide shows breakthrough results in obesity and liver disease trials
Boehringer Ingelheim has revealed positive findings from two major Phase III trials of survodutide, a drug designed to treat obesity and related conditions. The studies, named SYNCHRONIZE-1 and SYNCHRONIZE-MASLD, focused on adults with overweight or obesity, including those with liver disease linked to metabolic dysfunction. The SYNCHRONIZE-1 trial examined survodutide’s effects on weight loss in adults with obesity or overweight who did not have type 2 diabetes. Results were shared at the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Scientific Sessions and later published in The New England Journal of Medicine. The drug demonstrated significant potential for reducing body weight in participants.
The SYNCHRONIZE-MASLD trial extended the research to adults with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a condition often involving inflammation or fibrosis. Findings from this study were also presented at ADA 2026 and appeared in *Nature Medicine*. Beyond weight reduction, survodutide showed promise in improving metabolic health and liver function in these patients.
The outcomes from both trials highlight survodutide’s dual potential in tackling obesity and related metabolic complications. With data now published in leading medical journals, further steps may follow to assess its broader clinical use. The drug’s impact on liver health, alongside weight management, could offer new options for patients with complex metabolic conditions.
