Braunschweig Hospital Introduces Groundbreaking Treatment for Aortic Regurgitation
A new catheter-based treatment for severe aortic regurgitation is now available at the Städtisches Klinikum Braunschweig Herzzentrum. The procedure uses the JenaValve Trilogy, a system designed specifically for this condition. Until recently, many high-risk patients had no reliable minimally invasive option.
The hospital has already treated three patients with the new method this week. Experts describe it as a critical advancement for those previously facing limited choices.
The JenaValve Trilogy stands out because of its unique clip-and-anchor mechanism. This design ensures stable positioning, unlike older TAVI systems meant for calcified aortic stenosis. Those earlier systems often struggled with regurgitation cases, leaving patients with fewer safe alternatives.
Only a handful of German cardiac centres currently offer this therapy. The Herzzentrum der Zentralklinik Bad Berka was among the first, and Braunschweig has now adopted it as a standard treatment. While reports confirm at least 10 clinics provide the procedure, no full list of locations has been published.
Professor Dr. Tibor Kempf, Chief Physician at Braunschweig, called the introduction a strategic step forward. He noted it fills a long-standing gap in care for high-risk patients. Dr. Ingo Breitenbach, Senior Physician, added that the method is gentler and expands options for those who once had none.
The JenaValve Trilogy is now part of routine care at Braunschweig Municipal Hospital. Three patients have already received the treatment, with more expected to follow. For those with severe aortic regurgitation, this procedure offers a new, less invasive solution where few existed before.
