Brazil Establishes Vast Marine Park to Protect Whales and Dolphins

Brazil has created the South Atlantic's largest marine protected area, the Albardão Marine National Park. Located in Rio Grande do Sul, the park covers over one million hectares and will shield critical habitats for whales and endangered dolphins. Its establishment follows years of political resistance from fishing and offshore wind power industries.

The new park stretches along the southern coast near the mouth of the Arroio Albardão, roughly 400 kilometres south of Porto Alegre. It provides a refuge for southern right whales, humpback whales, La Plata dolphins, and Lahille dolphins—all species facing growing threats. Large sections will enforce total fishing bans, while a 558,000-hectare buffer zone and additional protected areas will further limit harmful activities.

The road to protection was not straightforward. Opposition from industrial sectors repeatedly stalled progress, delaying the park's creation. Whale and Dolphin Conservation (WDC) played a key role by supporting local NGOs in policy discussions and rallying public backing. Franziska Walter, WDC Germany's managing director, emphasised that strong enforcement and long-term safeguards will determine the park's success. Despite the challenges, the park's official designation proves that persistent conservation efforts can overcome political hurdles. The area now stands as a vital sanctuary for marine life in a region under increasing pressure.

The Albardão Marine National Park sets a precedent for marine conservation in Brazil. Its strict fishing restrictions and expansive protected zones aim to secure the future of endangered whale and dolphin populations. The project's success will depend on continued monitoring and the effective application of its protective measures.
