One Billion Euros for Container Terminal in Bremerhaven - Bremerhaven's container terminal eyes €1B electric upgrade to slash emissions

APM Terminals and Eurogate have announced a one-billion-euro investment plan for Bremerhaven's container terminal. The expansion aims to boost capacity and make operations fully electric, cutting greenhouse gas emissions. If approved, the project management will significantly increase the port's handling capabilities.

The proposed upgrade will raise the terminal's annual capacity from three million to four million standard containers (TEU). This follows years of steady growth—Bremerhaven's container throughput rose by 15% between 2021 and 2025, reaching 1.8 million TEU. Comparatively, Hamburg expanded by 10% to over nine million TEU, while Wilhelmshaven saw a 20% increase to 2.2 million TEU through efficiency improvements and new infrastructure.

The two companies are also in advanced talks to form a long-term partnership. Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk, stressed the need to future-proof the terminal and strengthen supply chain reliability. Meanwhile, Bremen's mayor, Andreas Bovenschulte, supported the plan but urged the federal government to accelerate the Outer Weser deepening project.

However, the investment still requires internal and external approvals. The deepening of the Outer Weser shipping channel, critical for larger vessels, remains unresolved.

If the project moves forward, Bremerhaven's terminal will handle an extra one million containers each year. The shift to electric operations would also reduce emissions, aligning with broader sustainability goals. Final decisions depend on regulatory approvals and infrastructure developments.
