Delayed Renovation - Lighthouse Kap Arkona Remains Closed - Cape Arkona Lighthouse remains closed as restoration delays stretch on

The Cape Arkona Lighthouse, a key maritime landmark on Germany's Rügen Island, remains closed to the public as restoration work drags on. Harsh winter weather has caused lengthy delays, pushing back plans to reopen the visitor platform. Officials now warn that the site will stay shut for several more weeks.

The lighthouse, standing 35 metres tall with its beam 75 metres above sea level, has been undergoing major repairs. This is the first large-scale renovation since 1991, with a budget of around €500,000. The work was initially meant to finish in April, allowing visitors to return.

Winter storms and freezing conditions in February halted progress, leaving essential tasks incomplete. Crews have struggled to catch up, and no firm reopening date has been set. The remaining work is expected to take another six to seven weeks.

Once complete, tourists will again climb the 164 steps to the observation deck. From there, views stretch to the island of Hiddensee and, on clear days, as far as Denmark's Møn. Nearby, the historic Schinkel Tower—a smaller lighthouse built in 1828 and decommissioned in 1905—adds to the site's maritime heritage.

The delays mean the lighthouse will stay off-limits for the foreseeable future. Visitors hoping to see the island's iconic beacon will need to wait until the restoration is fully finished. Authorities have not yet announced when access will resume.
