Veterinarians Find 26 Hair Ties in Cat's Stomach - Cat survives after vets remove 26 hair ties from its stomach

A six-year-old cat in Florida has survived emergency surgery after vets discovered 26 hair ties blocking its stomach. The animal's owners had initially considered euthanasia because they could not afford treatment. Instead, the procedure was funded by HALO, a local animal welfare group.

The cat was rushed to a veterinary clinic after showing signs of a severe intestinal blockage. During surgery, doctors removed a tightly packed cluster of 26 hair ties from its stomach. A staff member at HALO, with 13 years of experience, called it the largest number of hair ties ever seen in a single case.

The operation succeeded, and the cat is now recovering well. It has regained a healthy appetite and is expected to make a full recovery. HALO stepped in to cover the surgery costs, preventing the owners from having to put the animal down.

Gastrointestinal obstructions in pets are not uncommon in the US. Over the past five years, thousands of similar cases have been reported annually, according to veterinary studies. Around 80% involve dogs, with items like socks, toys, and bones most frequently ingested.

The cat's survival highlights the risks of pets swallowing small household objects. HALO's intervention ensured the animal received life-saving care. Veterinarians continue to warn owners about the dangers of leaving such items within reach of curious pets.
