Cebu City's new eco-station turns 15 tons of daily waste into resources
Cebu City has opened a new eco-station to turn waste into useful resources. The facility, launched at the South Road Properties (SRP), aims to cut landfill waste by 15 tons every day. It was inaugurated on June 6, 2026, marking World Environment Day with a step toward sustainability. The city produces around 1,200 tons of waste daily, yet only 700 tons are collected and disposed of. The eco-station currently processes about 15 tons per day from 10 barangays, with plans to expand capacity to 30–40 tons. Its goal is to convert waste into fertiliser, animal feed, and recyclables.
By 2028, Cebu City wants to reduce landfill waste by at least 30 percent. The initiative will involve all 51 urban barangays, shifting from traditional disposal to waste diversion. The city spends over P4 million daily on waste management, a cost it hopes to lower through this programme. Incentives may also be introduced for garbage collectors and barangays that deliver properly segregated waste. The eco-station serves as a model for turning trash into economic and environmental benefits.
The facility’s launch marks a key move in Cebu City’s waste management strategy. With expanded capacity and broader participation, it could significantly cut landfill reliance. The programme’s success will depend on consistent waste segregation and community involvement.
