Chanel's iconic J12 watch has evolved significantly since its debut. Originally designed as a bold black ceramic sports watch, it has expanded into new colours and technical refinements over the years. The latest addition, the J12 Bleu, arrived in 2025 with a striking matte deep blue finish. The J12 was first conceived by Jacques Helleu, who wanted a watch that combined sportiness with high-end craftsmanship. His vision led to a fully black ceramic timepiece—a material rarely used in watchmaking at the time. Chanel spent seven years developing the ceramic before launching the original model.
The design drew inspiration from the sleek lines of 1930s J-Class racing yachts, reinforcing the brand's maritime heritage. In 2003, the collection expanded with a white ceramic version, offering a fresh contrast to the original black.
A major update came in 2019, when Chanel reimagined the J12 with a refined case and the new Calibre 12.1 automatic movement. This COSC-certified mechanism boasts a 70-hour power reserve, improving both precision and durability.
The most recent addition, the J12 Bleu, was introduced in 2025. Its matte deep blue ceramic case continues the nautical theme while adding a modern twist to the classic design. From its groundbreaking black ceramic origins to the latest blue iteration, the J12 remains a standout in Chanel's watchmaking history. The 2025 J12 Bleu reinforces the collection's ties to maritime elegance while showcasing the brand's technical advancements. No earlier colour variants were documented before this release.
