Trial Against 'Last Generation' Activists Begins - Climate activist faces trial after gluing himself to Hamburg airport runway
A 21-year-old climate activist will face trial in Hamburg this Tuesday. The member of the 'Last Generation' group is accused of gluing himself to an airport runway last year. The protest disrupted flights and caused significant financial damage.
The activist allegedly entered the airport grounds and attached his hand to the tarmac using superglue. His actions led to flight cancellations, diversions, and costly repairs, totalling around €144,000 in damages. The trial was originally scheduled for last year but was later postponed.
The 'Last Generation' group has repeatedly made headlines for similar protests, including blocking roads and gluing themselves to surfaces. In a separate case, Jesuit priest Jörg Alt, another activist from the same group, was convicted for 10 counts of coercion related to street blockades. He received a €500 fine in October 2024, which he refused to pay. As a result, he served a 25-day prison sentence in Nuremberg from 1 to 25 April 2025.
The upcoming trial highlights the ongoing legal consequences for climate activists using disruptive tactics. The financial and operational impact of such protests continues to draw scrutiny. A verdict in this case could set further precedents for similar actions.
