Cognizant’s CEO, Ravi Kumar S, has called on businesses to move beyond superficial AI trends and focus on practical applications. Speaking recently, he dismissed the pursuit of ‘token maxxing’—a measure of AI model capacity—as a vanity metric that fails to reflect real-world performance. Under his leadership, the company has made major investments in AI while continuing to expand its workforce.

Since taking over as CEO in 2023, Ravi Kumar S has steered Cognizant toward a balanced approach to AI adoption. The firm invested over $1 billion in new AI infrastructure last year, yet it also hired 20,000 recent graduates. In 2024, recruitment numbers are set to rise further, with plans to bring in even more entry-level employees than in the previous year.

Ravi Kumar S has made it clear that technical expertise in AI is not a requirement for new hires. Instead, he emphasises the importance of deploying AI where it delivers tangible value. To support this strategy, Cognizant recently introduced two new roles: Frontier Certified Engineer and Frontier Business Operator. These positions aim to bridge the gap between AI capabilities and business needs. With over 350,000 employees globally, the company continues to grow its team. Despite heavy investment in automation, Ravi Kumar S insists that human talent remains central to driving innovation and operational efficiency.

The CEO’s strategy highlights a shift away from chasing AI benchmarks toward measurable business impact. Cognizant’s expanded hiring and new role structures suggest a long-term commitment to integrating AI with human skills.
