Critically endangered Great Indian Bustard chick hatches after decade-long conservation push

A rare Great Indian Bustard (GIB) chick has hatched in Gujarat after a decade of conservation efforts. The breakthrough came through a unique trans-state breeding programme involving Rajasthan and Gujarat. Union Minister Shri Bhupender Yadav announced the success, marking a key moment for the critically endangered species.

The project began in 2011 and was formally launched in 2016 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Known as Project GIB, it aims to protect the state bird of Rajasthan, which the IUCN lists as Critically Endangered.

A fertile egg from a captive-bred GIB in Rajasthan was carefully transported to Gujarat. Using a handheld portable incubator, conservationists ensured its safe arrival. On 26 March 2026, the egg hatched under the care of a tagged female GIB in Kutch. Meanwhile, other initiatives are also advancing sustainability and livelihoods. The Van Dhan scheme continues to boost tribal incomes by adding value to Minor Forest Produce (MFP). A recent Van Dhan Conclave focused on four key areas to further improve tribal livelihoods. In parallel, three Major Ports have been designated as hubs for the green hydrogen ecosystem under the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These ports are shifting to greener operations through programmes like the Green Tug Transition and Onshore Power Supply.

The hatching of the GIB chick demonstrates progress in wildlife conservation. The 'Jumpstart Approach' between Rajasthan and Gujarat could offer a model for future breeding efforts. Alongside this, ongoing schemes in tribal welfare and green energy highlight broader sustainability goals across the country.
