Crypto Sleuth ZachXBT Faces Backlash Over Donations and Potential Conflicts
A well-known crypto investigator has come under scrutiny after receiving large donations from projects he later covered less critically. ZachXBT, who has exposed over $500 million in fraud, now faces questions about his independence following a viral thread highlighting potential conflicts of interest. The debate centres on Hyperliquid, a crypto platform that donated 10,000 HYPE tokens—worth up to $600,000—to ZachXBT in March. After the transfer, his critical coverage of Hyperliquid reportedly slowed. This case has become the most discussed part of a thread questioning whether donations influence his investigations.
ZachXBT also received unsolicited meme tokens, including a newly created token called $ZACHXBT. An anonymous developer sent half of its total supply to his wallet, briefly pushing its market cap to around $88 million. Additionally, he sold roughly 16,059 SOL worth about $3.87 million in similar meme tokens. In 2023, ZachXBT faced a lawsuit and launched a community defence fund. Donations came from major firms like Binance and Bybit, as well as wallets linked to Hyperliquid. Critics later noted that some donors were not the focus of major investigations afterward. Separately, wallets connected to Polymarket allegedly made $1.2 million in profits before a ZachXBT post. However, no direct evidence tied these trades to insider knowledge.
The controversy highlights the challenges of maintaining neutrality in crypto investigations. ZachXBT’s past work exposed significant fraud, but recent donations and token transfers have raised concerns about potential conflicts. The discussion continues as the industry watches for further developments.
