December's Cold Moon: The Last Supermoon of 2024 Dazzles Skies
Skywatchers will get one last chance this year to witness a supermoon in early December. Known as the Cold Moon, it will shine brighter and appear larger than usual, offering a striking end to 2024’s celestial events. The December supermoon will peak on the night of December 4–5, reaching its highest point in the sky. At less than 360,000 kilometres from Earth, it will look around 7.9% bigger and 15% brighter than an average full moon. This event marks the final supermoon of 2024 and the highest one until 2042.
For the best view, experts recommend heading to open areas away from city lights. Light pollution can dull the Moon’s brilliance, so rural spots or parks will provide clearer sightings. After this, the next supermoon won’t appear until January 3, 2026. Until then, December’s Cold Moon offers a rare opportunity to see the Moon at its most impressive.
The Cold Moon will dominate the night sky with its size and brightness. Those who miss it will have to wait over a year for another supermoon. Clear skies and dark locations will make this celestial display even more memorable.
