New aviation project targets market for regional aircraft - Deutsche Aircraft's Leipzig Plant to Revolutionize Regional Aviation by 2027
Deutsche Aircraft is building a new manufacturing plant at Leipzig/Halle Airport for its D328eco regional aircraft. The facility marks one of the largest aviation projects in Saxony in decades. Despite weak domestic flight demand, the company aims to produce up to 48 planes per year in the long term.
The D328eco is a 40-seat regional aircraft designed to cut fuel use on short routes. Its efficiency could make short-haul flights more cost-effective compared to larger jets. The first test plane assembled in Leipzig should be ready by early 2027.
The project's success hinges on two key factors: market demand for regional flights and the availability of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). While SAF is essential for reducing emissions, shortages are expected over the next five years. Industry experts suggest blending mandates may work better than higher CO₂ taxes in pushing airlines toward greener fuels.
The Leipzig plant is also set to create around 150 skilled assembly jobs in the long run. With aircraft production relying heavily on manual labour—about 80% of the work—expansion could bring even more employment opportunities to the region.
The Leipzig facility represents a major step for regional aviation in Germany. If demand and fuel supply align, the plant could strengthen Saxony's role in aircraft manufacturing. The first test flight remains on track for completion in early 2027.
