The Secret of Finnish Happiness - Finland's secret to happiness lies in nature and ancient freedoms
Finland has once again been named one of the happiest places on Earth. A new Terra X episode, hosted by veterinarian and conservationist Hannah Emde, sets out to uncover the reasons behind this enduring contentment. The documentary explores how the country's deep connection to nature and unique way of life shape its people's well-being.
The episode, titled Fascinating Earth with Hannah Emde: Finland – The Search for Happiness, examines the stark contrasts that define Finnish life. Residents endure extreme winters with temperatures plunging to -40°C, followed by warm summers under the midnight sun. These dramatic shifts have fostered resilience and a profound appreciation for the natural world.
Central to Finnish culture is Everyman's Right (jokamiehenoikeus), a tradition stretching back to medieval times. Originally rooted in agrarian customs, it gained legal recognition in the 1950s as part of post-war land reforms. Today, laws like the Nature Conservation Act (updated in 2023) and the Criminal Code protect this right, allowing everyone to hike, pick berries, or camp on private land—provided they avoid motorised vehicles, open fires, or damage. Many Finns credit this freedom with their sense of happiness.
Emde, who co-founded the wildlife charity Nepada Wildlife e.V. in 2017, brings her passion for environmental conservation to the screen. The film highlights how Finns view nature not just as a resource but as a source of joy and sustenance, from vast forests to thousands of fishing lakes.
The documentary premieres on ZDF on March 8, 2023, at 7:30 PM. It will also be available to stream in the ZDF Media Library from March 4, 2023.
The episode sheds light on Finland's blend of harsh conditions, legal freedoms, and cultural values. By respecting nature and embracing simplicity, the country offers a model of well-being that continues to rank it among the world's happiest. Viewers can explore these themes when the programme airs next month.
