Firefly Aerospace achieves historic first lunar landing with Blue Ghost 1
Firefly Aerospace made history with its first lunar landing on 2 March 2025. The company’s Blue Ghost 1 spacecraft touched down in Mare Crisium, a region on the moon’s near side. This success marked a turning point for Firefly, once known mainly as a launch provider. Blue Ghost 1 operated on the lunar surface for two weeks before powering down as the sun set. The mission carried 10 NASA payloads under the agency’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) programme. Joel Kearns, a senior NASA official, later confirmed the mission as a complete success.
The achievement boosted Firefly’s reputation and opened new opportunities. Within months, the company secured non-NASA contracts for future Blue Ghost landers. In July 2025, Firefly won another major mission award, ensuring a steady production line of landers until at least 2030. Five months after the landing, Firefly went public on Nasdaq, raising nearly $1 billion. The mission control team behind Blue Ghost 1 had an average age of just 28. Later that year, on 2 December, Firefly received recognition at the 8th annual SpaceNews Icon Awards in Washington, D.C.
Blue Ghost 1’s landing expanded Firefly’s role in space exploration. The mission’s success led to new contracts, a public stock listing, and industry awards. The company now stands as a key player in lunar and commercial spaceflight.
