Five Birs River towns unite to fight invasive plant species in 2026

Five municipalities along the Birs River have joined forces to tackle invasive plant species. The Neophyte Action Days 2026 will run from May to August, with a focus on removing non-native plants to protect local biodiversity. Residents, schools, and businesses are all encouraged to take part in the effort. The initiative targets invasive neophytes and neobiota, which threaten native species along the riverbanks. By controlling these plants, organisers hope to restore balance to the ecosystem and support natural diversity. The project also aims to raise public awareness and involve the community in conservation work.

Two evening events in Münchenstein will kick off the campaign. The first takes place on Wednesday, May 20, from 6 to 8 PM, followed by another on Thursday, July 30, at the same time. Participants will work together to clear invasive species from the area.

Beyond Münchenstein, the neighbouring towns of Arlesheim, Reinach, Aesch, and Birsfelden are also contributing. Birsfelden has expanded its involvement by funding additional biodiversity projects and promoting resource recycling. Each municipality will host similar activities throughout the summer. The Neophyte Action Days offer a hands-on way for locals to help protect their environment. By removing invasive plants, the project seeks to create healthier habitats for native wildlife. Organisers have stressed that long-term success depends on continued community engagement.
