France unveils €46 billion military surge with next-gen nuclear carrier by 2038

President Emmanuel Macron has announced a major military push to strengthen France's defences. He called for a more powerful and feared nation in the face of growing global threats. The plans include a €10 billion next-generation aircraft carrier and a €36 billion boost for the armed forces by 2030.

Macron stressed that France must remain free through resistance and military strength. His speech highlighted the need for rapid industrial production and innovation to secure the country's future.

Macron revealed plans for a new nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to replace the Charles de Gaulle. The vessel, set to enter service in 2038, will stretch 310 metres and weigh 80,000 tons. It will feature two nuclear reactors and advanced systems to launch and recover up to 40 aircraft at once.

France is one of only two nations—alongside the US—to operate such carriers. No other European country currently has similar projects under way. The president also demanded faster mass production of military equipment. He warned of spreading conflicts and global instability. To fund these efforts, he proposed an extra €3.5 billion this year and €3 billion in 2025, with a total of €36 billion by 2030. Macron tied France's independence to technological and industrial progress. He insisted that military strength would ensure the nation's freedom and influence on the world stage.

The new carrier and funding increases mark a significant expansion of France's defence capabilities. With no comparable European projects, the country will maintain a unique military position. The €10 billion carrier and €36 billion investment aim to secure France's role as a leading global power.
