Fribourg proposes sweeping ban on disposable vapes to curb youth addiction

The canton of Fribourg is planning a full ban on disposable vapes. A new draft law would stop their news, distribution, and production to protect health and cut waste. The move follows growing concerns about youth appeal and environmental harm from these devices.

The proposed legislation includes strict controls on product content, packaging, and advertising. Tobacco and e-cigarette ads would be banned in public spaces and indoor areas. Free giveaways of vaping products would also be outlawed under the new rules.

To enforce age limits, undercover test purchases would check retailer compliance. The draft law also introduces a reporting requirement for all shops selling tobacco, e-cigarettes, or similar items. Companies would face tighter self-regulation duties to prevent illegal news.

Fribourg's consultation on the measures runs until 12 June 2026. The canton joins Geneva, Valais, Basel-City, and Bern in pushing for stricter vaping and tobacco news. Health experts have repeatedly warned about the risks of disposable vapes, from addiction in young people to pollution from discarded devices.

If approved, the ban would make Fribourg one of the strictest cantons on disposable vapes. Retailers and manufacturers would need to adapt to new product and advertising rules. The final decision will depend on feedback from the ongoing public consultation.
