The climate strike by Fridays for Future in Braunschweig builds on last weekend's protests in Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne, and Munich, according to a press release from the local chapter.
Fossil Fuels Drive Dependency
"Soaring gas prices in the wake of the Iran conflict prove once again: Fossil fuels make us dependent on international crises and autocratic regimes! Yet our Economics Minister, Katherina Reiche, completely ignores this reality, instead pushing billions into new gas-fired power plants that will only deepen our reliance. And of course, she's also blocking the expansion of renewables in Germany, ensuring we never achieve energy independence," says Niko Schoss of Fridays for Future Braunschweig.
The movement emphasizes the benefits of renewable energy: not only does it provide affordable, independent power for Germany and protect the climate, but it can also create jobs and strengthen the economy. That's why Fridays for Future is demanding a fully renewable energy supply by 2035—a shift that would give German industry long-term planning security.
"We've been taking to the streets for seven years to demand stronger climate action. With renewables now accounting for 62 percent of our energy mix, we're on the right track. That's exactly why we must resist Katherina Reiche's reckless energy policy. We cannot let years of progress be gambled away—because we're all paying the price for these misguided decisions!" adds Alexander Dammmeier of Fridays for Future Braunschweig.
