German Wood Packaging Industry Tackles New EU Regulations and Market Shifts

Around 140 members of the German Wood Packaging, Pallets, and Export Packaging Association (HPE) met in Mainz for their annual spring conference. The event explored regulatory changes, geopolitical risks, and digital advancements in the wood packaging industry. The conference opened with discussions on the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Marcus Kirschner, HPE managing director, explained its requirements, while Dr. Patrick Krampitz from Pauly Rechtsanwälte offered legal perspectives. Many practical questions about its implementation remained unresolved.

Fabian Häckler shared updates on the HPECycle network, designed to simplify PPWR compliance for wood packaging businesses. The HPE also revealed a new 150-page guide to help companies navigate the regulation. Additionally, the association suggested HPECycle could later act as an extended producer responsibility organisation for wood packaging in Germany.

Gordon Schnieder, the incoming minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate, spoke with attendees about the opportunities and challenges facing small and medium-sized enterprises. Rob Driessen, managing director of the CONNEC3 Group, reviewed European timber market trends and strategies to handle price fluctuations. Retired Lieutenant General Christian Badia assessed how global geopolitical shifts might affect supply chains and business operations. The conference provided updates on the PPWR and practical tools for compliance. Attendees gained insights into market volatility, geopolitical risks, and regulatory changes. The HPE’s new guide and HPECycle network aim to support businesses in adapting to the evolving landscape.
