Germany Now Lets Doctors Prescribe Digital Therapy Apps for Cognitive Care
Doctors in Germany can now prescribe digital health programs for patients with cognitive impairments. These certified applications, known as Digitale Gesundheitsanwendungen (DiGA), are covered by health insurers. The move aims to make evidence-based cognitive therapies more accessible to those in need.
Germany's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) carefully reviews each DiGA before approval. Unlike earlier commercial brain-training apps, these programs must prove their effectiveness through clinical research. One such program, NeuroNation MED, showed positive results in a study involving 288 participants.
Patients with mild cognitive impairment, early-stage dementia, or post-COVID cognitive deficits can now benefit from these digital solutions. A doctor's prescription is required, granting users a 90-day free trial before insurance coverage begins. Some programs, like Memodio, adapt exercises to match individual cognitive abilities, offering a tailored approach to therapy.
The growing demand for digital therapies reflects Germany's ageing population and increasing digitalisation. These location-independent solutions remove financial barriers, ensuring broader access to cognitive support.
The approval of DiGA-certified programs marks a shift toward evidence-based digital therapies in Germany. With insurance coverage, more patients can access structured cognitive training without upfront costs. The BfArM's official DiGA directory lists all approved applications for public reference.
