More than 4.5 million tons: Vegetable harvest in Germany reaches record high - Germany's 2023 vegetable harvest shatters records with 4.5M metric tons

Germany's vegetable harvest hit a new high in 2023, surpassing 4.5 million metric tons for the first time since records began in 1990. The total marked an 8% increase from the previous year, with organic farming playing a significant role in the growth.

Onions led the harvest, with farmers collecting around 903,000 metric tons. Carrots followed closely at just under 866,000 metric tons. White cabbage and pickling cucumbers also ranked among the top four most harvested crops.

Nearly 6,000 farms cultivated vegetables across almost 132,000 hectares of land. Organic producers focused mainly on carrots, onions, and pumpkins, though they also grew cabbages, lettuces, spinach, beans, and asparagus. Greenhouses and polytunnels were mostly used for tomatoes, cucumbers, and bell peppers.

Organic farming made up roughly 16% of the total cultivated area, contributing to the record-breaking yield.

The 2023 harvest set a new benchmark, with both conventional and organic farms boosting production. The figures reflect a steady rise in vegetable output, particularly in key crops like onions and carrots.
