Leopoldina becomes a venue for art focused on autonomy - Germany's Leopoldina Academy Debuts Bold Art Installations on Autonomy
The Leopoldina, Germany's National Academy of Sciences, will exhibit two large-scale art installations at its Halle headquarters. These works were chosen to commemorate this year's Annual Assembly, which explores the theme of Autonomy. Both projects will debut in August, ahead of the main event in September.
The selected artworks approach the concept of autonomy in distinct ways. Sculptor Julia Schleicher's installation, Autonomy of the Doll, features oversized cocoons and doll-like figures. Her piece examines the transformation occurring inside an insect's cocoon, linking biological change to broader ideas of self-governance.
The second project, Collective Autonomy, comes from the artist collective Klub7. Their outdoor installation combines wood, fabrics, sound, and light. Unlike traditional static displays, this work will extend beyond the academy's grounds, engaging passersby with both visual and auditory elements.
This collaboration marks a first for the Leopoldina, which has no recorded history of prior art projects or exhibitions. The academy is partnering with the Art Foundation of Saxony-Anhalt to bring the installations to life. The Annual Assembly, where the theme will be discussed in depth, takes place on September 24 and 25.
The two installations will remain on display after their August unveiling. They represent the Leopoldina's first foray into integrating contemporary art with its scientific mission. The academy's decision to explore autonomy through creative works reflects a new direction in its public engagement.
