Scientists are closely watching a series of massive sunspots on the Sun’s surface. These dark patches, each larger than Earth, have grown rapidly in recent days. The sunspots, now labelled AR 4294-4298, are among the largest observed in the last decade. They first appeared as AR 4274, a region previously linked to vivid auroras. Since re-emerging, they have expanded into three distinct clusters.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) is tracking their development. If these regions release plasma toward Earth, the collision with our magnetic field could disrupt satellites and cause power outages. The current sunspot area is roughly 90 percent the size of the one behind the historic 1859 Carrington Event, which caused global telegraph failures. In the coming days, the sunspots may shift into a position more directly facing Earth. This change would raise the chances of solar flares and coronal mass ejections reaching our planet. If they do, the interaction could produce dazzling auroras visible far beyond the polar regions.

The sunspots pose a potential risk to power grids and communication systems if a major solar storm occurs. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as the active regions evolve. Any significant eruptions could lead to both spectacular natural displays and technological disruptions.
