Grevenbroich tackles subsidence damage with major Breite Straße repairs
Repair work on Breite Straße in Grevenbroich's city centre will start next week. The project aims to fix damage caused by ground subsidence from historic lignite mining. The affected section runs between house numbers 10 and 30/32.
The repairs will address sunken areas in the roadway, damaged paving on sidewalks, and uneven tree pits. Business entrance zones will also be restored, along with drainage channels. The work follows long-term ground depressions linked to old underground mining activity.
To reduce disruption, the project will be carried out in stages. RWE Power AG's Subsidence Department has commissioned the repairs, with an engineering firm overseeing the process. Grevenbroich's municipal services have asked residents and businesses to bear with any temporary inconvenience.
The construction is expected to last until around the end of April 2026. No specific timeline exists for when subsidence typically becomes noticeable in built-up areas after mine closures.
The repairs will stabilise the road and sidewalks for long-term use. Businesses and residents along Breite Straße will see gradual improvements over the coming months. The staged approach ensures minimal interference with daily activities.
