Hanau Sustainability Award Celebrates 10 Years with Digital Shift and €9,000 in Prizes

The Hanau Sustainability Award is marking its 10th anniversary this year. Organisers have updated the event with new category names and a fully digital application process. A total of €9,000 in prize money will be distributed to winners across four distinct areas. Applications for the award are now open and will close on Sunday, May 3, 2026. The process has moved entirely online, requiring participants to submit entries through a dedicated digital tool. Eligible applicants include schools, daycare centres, associations, businesses, families, and individuals.

The four categories reflect different stages of sustainability work. The 'Environment and Nature' and 'Democracy and Social Cohesion' categories focus on completed projects, with winners selected by public vote. Meanwhile, the 'Ideas and Innovation' category supports proposals that need funding to get off the ground. For private individuals, the 'Garden and Balcony' category invites submissions of nature-friendly outdoor spaces that boost biodiversity.

All entries must align with the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The prize money comes from the city of Hanau, Umicore AG & Co. KG, and Sparkasse Hanau. Winners will be announced at an award ceremony on Monday, June 8, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Congress Park Hanau. The updated award structure and digital submission system aim to streamline participation. The ceremony in June will recognise projects that contribute to sustainability in Hanau. With €9,000 in funding available, organisers hope to inspire further community engagement in environmental and social initiatives.
