Seal ventures deep into Stormarn district - Healthy seal surprises locals by swimming 50 km inland in Germany

A seal has been spotted near the Beste river in Grabau, Stormarn district, around 50 kilometres inland from Travemünde. The animal appeared in good health, surprising locals but raising no immediate concerns from conservation experts.

The sighting occurred along the river, where the seal was observed swimming upstream. Wildlife officials noted that such behaviour, while unusual, is not unheard of—animals from the animal kingdom often travel far inland if food is available.

Local seal conservation officers examined the animal and confirmed it looked well-fed and healthy. No signs of distress were reported, and the seal did not require intervention.

Authorities have reminded the public to stay 200 to 300 metres away if they encounter the seal. Dogs must also be kept on a leash to avoid disturbing the animal. The source of the initial report remains unknown.

The seal's presence has drawn attention, but experts see no cause for alarm. Residents are urged to follow guidelines to ensure the animal's safety. For now, the seal continues its journey upstream without human interference.
