Baby Chimpanzee Born at Hellabrunn Zoo - Hellabrunn Zoo Welcomes First Baby Chimpanzee in 21 Years
A baby chimpanzee has arrived at Hellabrunn Zoo in Munich, marking the first such birth there in over two decades. The newborn, a Central African chimpanzee, is currently in excellent health. Zoo staff have watched as the infant clings to its mother, Zenta, while exploring its new home.
The last chimpanzee born at Hellabrunn was in 2003, making this event a rare and exciting moment for the zoo. The baby's father, Jambo, joined the group last year through the European Endangered Species Programme. Like Zenta and another female, Sophie, he is also a Central African chimpanzee.
Zoo director Rasem Baban shared his enthusiasm about the new arrival. The baby's sex remains unknown for now, but visitors can already spot it in the Rainforest House. There, it stays close to Zenta, who is providing attentive care.
The birth adds a valuable member to the endangered Central African chimpanzee subspecies at Hellabrunn. The zoo's team continues to monitor the baby's progress as it grows under Zenta's watch. This event highlights the importance of conservation efforts for Central African chimpanzees in captivity.
