Hildesheim's Roemer Museum Glows with After-Hours Flashlight Tours of Ancient Egypt
The Roemer- und Pelizaeus-Museum (RPM) in Hildesheim is drawing visitors with unique after-hours experiences. While the city's pedestrian zone faces challenges, the museum continues to flourish. One of its latest attractions is a guided flashlight tour through its Ancient Egyptian collection—the second-largest in Germany.
The tour begins at an impressive staircase inside the museum's modern wing. Each participant receives a torch to explore dimly lit galleries. The focus lies on artifacts tied to the Egyptians' beliefs about the afterlife.
This offering follows a difficult period for the RPM. In early November 2023, a break-in forced the museum to split its permanent exhibition in two. Insurance limits meant only part of the collection could be displayed without extra protection. As a result, the second section remains closed while the museum installs specialised security cases.
The RPM also connects to Hildesheim's illuminated 'World Heritage Trail', a granite-paved walkway linking key sites. At the end of the flashlight tour, guides highlight other off-hours events, like yoga sessions and themed dinners, encouraging visitors to return.
The museum's new security measures and creative programming aim to keep crowds coming. With its expanded offerings and ongoing upgrades, the RPM stands out as a bright spot in Hildesheim's cultural scene. The flashlight tours and future events are designed to attract both locals and tourists.
