Italy Approves 467 MW of New Battery Storage Projects by 2026
Italy's Ministry for Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has greenlit a series of large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in March 2026. The approvals cover seven new facilities with a combined capacity of 467 MW, marking a significant expansion in the country's energy storage infrastructure. The projects span multiple regions, with some of the largest installations set for construction in the coming months. The first wave of authorisations in early March cleared 165 MW of capacity. Among these, the largest facility—a 130 MW BESS in Loreo—was proposed by EG Orchidea Srl. Another major project, a 100 MW system in Turin, received approval under RNE20 Srl's development plan.
Later in the month, MASE issued further decrees, adding 302 MW to the approved total. Bess Arezzo Srl secured permission for a 75 MW BESS in Arezzo, while SKI 38 Srl was authorised to build a 48 MW facility named 'Accumulo Villa Castelli' in Villa Castelli. SKI B A2 Srl also gained approval for a 48 MW project, 'Accumulo Galatina', in Galatone. Smaller but notable projects include a 42 MW BESS, 'Accumulo Montemilone', in Montemilone by SKI B A3 Srl, and a 24 MW installation in Pegognaga, developed by Aura IT 10 Srl. These facilities will contribute to Italy's growing energy storage network, supporting grid stability and renewable integration.
The seven approved BESS projects will bring Italy's total new storage capacity to 467 MW by 2026. The facilities, spread across regions like Veneto, Piedmont, Tuscany, and Puglia, are set to enhance the country's ability to manage energy demand and integrate renewable sources. Construction timelines and operational dates will depend on further regulatory and logistical steps.
