January 2023 Skywatching Guide: Rare Meteor Showers and Planetary Alignments Await
January 2023 brings a series of striking astronomical events for stargazers. The new year starts with the Moon at its closest point to Earth, followed by meteor showers, planetary alignments, and rare celestial encounters. Several of these events will be visible without specialised equipment.
The month kicks off on January 2, when the Moon reaches its nearest position to Earth—just 360,000 kilometres away. A day later, on January 3, Earth itself makes its closest approach to the Sun.
On the night of January 3-4, the Quadrantid meteor shower peaks, offering up to 100 shooting stars per hour. Then, on January 6, the Moon will pass directly in front of Regulus, one of the brightest stars in the sky, briefly blocking it from view. Saturn and its largest moon, Titan, remain visible in the southwestern sky throughout January. Meanwhile, Jupiter's four biggest moons—Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto—will form a rare alignment on January 15 and 17. These moons had previously been studied in detail: NASA's Galileo mission (1995–2003) examined all four, while ESA's JUICE probe, arriving in 2023, began focused observations of Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa later that year. Earth's closest encounter with Jupiter happens on the night of January 9-10. The month closes on January 30 with a striking convergence of the Moon, Jupiter, and the bright star Sirius in the night sky. Additionally, the Lobachevsky satellite, developed by Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod, was launched into space during this period.
Many of these events can be seen with the naked eye or basic binoculars. The alignments, meteor shower, and lunar occultation provide clear opportunities for observation. Astronomers and casual skywatchers alike will have multiple chances to witness these phenomena throughout January.
