Khabarovsk rolls out AI-powered traffic lights to cut congestion and delays
Khabarovsk has started installing AI-powered traffic lights across the city. The first three have already been set up along Karl Marx Street. This move marks the beginning of a larger plan to modernise traffic management in the region. The city currently operates around 300 traffic lights, most of which are controlled manually. The new AI system analyses vehicle and pedestrian traffic patterns to improve flow and reduce delays. Fine-tuning each traffic light’s operation is expected to take about a month.
This year, Khabarovsk plans to launch nine smart traffic lights, with 47.4 million rubles allocated for the project. Five more intersections along Karl Marx Street will receive the new system soon. By 2027, the city aims to deploy 40 AI-powered traffic lights, with a total budget of around 150 million rubles.
The initiative is part of Russia’s national development program, Infrastructure for Life. The smart lights are designed to boost efficiency, cut congestion, and improve safety for both drivers and pedestrians. The project will expand gradually, with more intersections receiving AI-powered systems in the coming years. The technology is expected to streamline traffic and enhance road safety. Funding and implementation will continue under the national infrastructure program.
