Early Childhood Support Conference Held in Komi Capital
A scientific and practical conference titled "Developing Early Intervention for Children and Their Families in the Republic of Komi" took place in Syktyvkar at the initiative of Tatiana Kozlova, the Children's Rights Commissioner under the head of the Republic of Komi. The event brought together representatives from executive authorities, the State Council of the Republic of Komi, as well as specialists in healthcare, education, and social protection, according to the Komi Ministry of Education and Science.
A distinguished guest at the conference was Victoria Lorer, Director of the Federal Methodological Center for Early Childhood Intervention at the G.A. Albrecht Federal Research and Educational Center for Medical and Social Expertise and Rehabilitation, under Russia's Ministry of Labor and Social Protection. Conference participants visited the Republican Children's Clinical Hospital, the Center for Medical and Social Assistance to Children, the "Nadezhda" Social Rehabilitation and Habilitation Center for Children with Disabilities, the Komi Republican Institute of Education Development's parental support consultation center, and the Syktyvkar Humanities and Pedagogical College named after I.A. Kuratov.
During the conference, attendees explored the practices of one of Russia's leading child development institutions—the Moscow Center for Therapeutic Pedagogy—as well as the experience of Komi Republic facilities in providing support to children under three years old.
"There are many cases where early intervention for children and families has been the very catalyst that spurs personal development," noted Victoria Lorer. "But we must recognize that only a strong alliance of doctors, psychological and pedagogical specialists, and parents—built on mutual trust and a shared commitment to a common goal—can unlock a child's potential and set them on the path to an independent and fulfilling life."
Early childhood intervention is a comprehensive set of services aimed at fostering a child's physical and mental development, engaging them in natural life situations, and promoting positive parent-child interactions and social inclusion. It is particularly crucial in the first years of life, when a child's brain develops rapidly and the foundations of trust, communication, speech, and independence are formed. Timely identification and correction of developmental challenges significantly impact a child's future growth and the well-being of their family.
In the Republic of Komi's education system, early intervention services for children and counseling support for parents are provided by 83 advisory centers operating under 75 preschool institutions, five general education schools, and three republican consultation hubs: the Republican Center for Psychological, Pedagogical, Medical, and Social Assistance; the Syktyvkar Center for Psychological, Pedagogical, Medical, and Social Assistance; and the Komi Republican Institute for Educational Development.
To streamline access for parents and specialists, the region has compiled a unified registry of early intervention organizations and services, available on the website of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection of the Republic of Komi.
Through the combined efforts of the government, professionals, and families, children with developmental challenges gain opportunities for full social integration and a successful transition into everyday life.
