Krasnodar shivers through its coldest, wettest May in decades

Krasnodar has endured an unusually cold and wet May in 2026. Since the start of the month, the city has seen nearly two and a half times its normal rainfall, with temperatures well below average. Forecasters describe it as the wettest May in at least 50 years and the second-coldest of the 21st century so far. By May 31, the city had recorded 161 mm of rain—248% of the usual amount. A single downpour on May 30 delivered 31 mm, nearly half the expected total for the entire month. More rain was forecast for the final day, pushing records even higher.

Temperatures also stayed stubbornly low. The average for May reached just +15.7°C, a full 2.1°C below the seasonal norm. This made it the second-chilliest May since 2000, with no sign of warming until mid-June. Residents can expect some relief in early June, as rain eases and temperatures slowly climb. However, normal seasonal warmth is not predicted to return until the second week of the month.

The extreme weather has left Krasnodar with its coldest and wettest May in decades. While conditions should improve soon, full recovery to typical summer temperatures will take several more days. Forecasters continue to monitor the situation as June begins.
