The Bund Naturschutz (BN) Ottobeuren local chapter held its annual general meeting at the Silachstube hall in Gasthof Mohren. Among the highlights was a lecture on light pollution by Robert Blasius, representing the Guardians of the Night initiative. The event also recognised long-standing members and celebrated Wendelin Schindele's contributions to the local herb garden. During the meeting, Robert Blasius spoke about the growing issue of light pollution. Satellite images show Earth's nightside illuminated by cities and coastal areas, while poorer regions remain largely dark. Studies confirm that excessive artificial light disrupts natural cycles, harming both wildlife and human health.
The gathering also honoured Wendelin Schindele for his decades of work shaping the herb garden. Developed since 1998 under his guidance, the space has become a peaceful retreat for reflection. Schindele received a poster, a gift basket from the Eine-Welt-Laden, and a token of appreciation for his colleague, Harald Mader. Longtime BN members were recognised for their dedication, with certificates and silver lapel pins awarded to those with over 40 years of service. The event highlighted both environmental advocacy and the chapter's commitment to its community.
The meeting concluded with acknowledgments of Schindele's legacy and the ongoing efforts to address light pollution. Members left with a renewed focus on conservation and community engagement. The next steps will likely involve further initiatives to reduce unnecessary artificial lighting in the region.
