Maharashtra launches massive crackdown on cattle smuggling before Bakri Eid 2026

Maharashtra has launched a statewide crackdown on cattle smuggling ahead of Bakri Eid. The operation, announced by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, will run from May 25 to May 28, 2026. Authorities aim to stop illegal transport, unauthorised slaughter, and cruelty towards cattle during the festival period. The enforcement drive will see Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), border check posts, and transport authorities conducting intensive vehicle inspections. Special checkpoints will be set up in Mumbai, border areas, and other high-risk routes. Coordination between local police, traffic police, the Animal Husbandry Department, and cow protection groups will strengthen the operation.

Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik issued a stern warning against cow smuggling and illegal slaughter. Offenders will face strict legal action, including vehicle seizures. The crackdown follows concerns over cattle being transported in overcrowded and inhumane conditions, particularly during festivals. Maharashtra has granted the indigenous cow the status of 'Rajyamata' (mother of the state), reinforcing its cultural and legal protection. The operation will focus on preventing cruelty, unauthorised slaughterhouses, and illegal cattle movement across the state.

The four-day inspection drive will target key routes and border areas. Vehicles found transporting cattle illegally will be confiscated, and offenders prosecuted. The government’s move aims to enforce existing laws and protect cattle from exploitation during the festival season.
