Mary Simon's $15M Initiative Boosts Mental Health in Northern Communities

Outgoing Governor General Mary Simon has launched a new project to fund mental health services in Northern and Indigenous communities. The initiative, backed by the Rideau Hall Foundation, aims to address a severe shortage of support in remote areas. Simon, who grew up in the Arctic, has long championed the needs of the region. The project will receive $5 million from the federal government. An additional $10 million has been pledged to match funds raised by the foundation. Simon’s efforts build on her 2024 mental health listening and learning tour, which highlighted gaps in care across the North.

Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged Simon’s work in raising awareness for rural and remote communities. He noted her consistent focus on improving conditions in the Arctic, where she was born and raised. The Rideau Hall Foundation will oversee the project’s implementation, ensuring funds reach local, community-based programmes.

The funding will directly support mental health services in underserved Northern and Indigenous communities. Simon’s initiative reflects her lifelong dedication to the Arctic and its residents. The combined $15 million in contributions will help expand access to care where it is most needed.
