15-Ton Rotor Blade Falls Off Wind Turbine Near Berching - Massive 60-Meter Wind Turbine Blade Collapses in Bavaria's Oberpfalz

A rotor blade from a wind turbine has collapsed near Berching in Bavaria's Oberpfalz region. The 60-metre-long structure crashed to the ground, though no injuries were reported. Authorities are now examining what caused the rare failure.

The incident took place at a wind farm with ten turbines, six of which are run by Windpower's local citizen group. The affected turbine had been in operation since 2012 and underwent maintenance just last November. Each of its blades measures nearly 60 metres, matching the length of the one that detached.

Such failures are uncommon but not unheard of. Germany's 30,000-plus onshore turbines experience around 50 significant incidents each year. The likelihood of a severe malfunction remains below 0.2 percent, and Windpower itself had never recorded a similar event in its 30-year history. Investigators are still working to pinpoint the exact cause. Most turbines operate reliably, with major concentrations in Niedersachsen, Schleswig-Holstein, and Sachsen-Anhalt. New projects are also underway in Hessen and Schleswig-Holstein.

The blade's collapse marks the first such incident for Windpower. While rare, the event highlights ongoing safety checks across Germany's expanding wind energy sector. Further details will depend on the investigation's findings.
