A Whale in Wismar Harbor - Massive fin whale trapped in Baltic Sea fishing gear sparks dramatic rescue

A massive fin whale caused surprise in a Baltic Sea harbour after becoming trapped in fishing gear. The animal, measuring between 10 and 12 metres long, was dragging a 100-metre gillnet behind it. Emergency teams rushed to help free the distressed creature.

The whale's appearance in the Baltic Sea was unusual, as such large marine mammals rarely enter the area. Rescuers, including firefighters, water police, and volunteers from Sea Shepherd, worked together to cut away the net. Despite their efforts, a thick rope remained tightly wrapped around the whale's body.

The animal was visibly stressed by the entanglement and the rescue attempts. Divers tried to get close enough to remove the remaining rope, but the whale's size and agitation made the task difficult. Experts warned that if the rope stays in place, it could cut deeper into the whale's flesh as it continues to grow.

Over the past five years, around 150 large whales—mostly fin and right whales—have been caught in fishing gear across the Baltic Sea. Sweden, Poland, and Germany have reported the highest numbers of such incidents, according to data from HELCOM and the International Whaling Commission.

The whale was eventually freed from the net, though the remaining rope still poses a risk. Authorities continue to monitor the situation, as entanglements like this can cause long-term harm to marine wildlife. The incident highlights the ongoing dangers that abandoned or lost fishing gear presents to large sea creatures in the region.
