Measles exposure alert issued at Iowa hotel after infected traveler's stay

A potential measles exposure has been reported at a hotel in Independence, Iowa. Health officials issued an alert after an infected traveller from Illinois stayed at the Comfort Inn and Suites in early March. The visitor was contagious during their two-day stay at the location.

The infected individual, an Illinois resident, checked into the Comfort Inn and Suites between March 4 and March 5. Authorities have warned that the virus can remain airborne for up to two hours after an infected person leaves an area.

Iowa's Department of Public Health advised anyone present at the hotel during those dates to watch for symptoms. These include fever, cough, red or watery eyes, a runny nose, and a distinctive skin rash. Those experiencing such signs should contact their doctor before visiting a clinic in person. Last year, Iowa recorded nine confirmed measles cases. So far in 2026, no infections have been reported among state residents.

The public health alert follows the Illinois resident's visit while contagious. Officials urge anyone potentially exposed to seek medical advice promptly. For the latest guidance, residents can check the Iowa Department of Public Health's website or contact them directly.
