Microsoft drops phone activation for Windows and Office users

Microsoft has ended its phone-based activation service for Windows and Office products. The change took effect in November, pushing users toward an online system instead. Those trying to activate by phone now face automatic redirection to a new digital news portal.

The shift affects Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 7, and various Office versions. Microsoft confirmed the move in December 2025, though no major advance notice was given. A new online activation portal, launched on December 3, 2025, now handles all standard activations.

Users can no longer complete activation via telephone support. Instead, they must use a Microsoft account or an internet-connected secondary device for offline setups. This follows an earlier restriction from 2024, when Windows 11 installations blocked local account creation during the initial setup process.

The company has not provided a detailed explanation for the change. However, the new portal is accessible at https://visualsupport.microsoft.com/.

The removal of phone activation marks another step toward Microsoft's account-based ecosystem. Users must now rely on online methods, either through a direct connection or a secondary device. The change aligns with previous moves to phase out local-only account options in Windows.
